How GST Calculation Works - Formulas & Examples
GST Formulas:
GST Exclusive (Adding GST):
GST Amount = Original Price × (GST Rate ÷ 100)
Total Price = Original Price + GST Amount
GST Inclusive (Removing GST):
GST Amount = Total Price × [GST Rate ÷ (100 + GST Rate)]
Original Price = Total Price - GST Amount
Step 1: Enter Amount
Enter the transaction value - either base price (excluding GST) or total price (including GST).
Step 2: Select GST Rate
Choose applicable GST rate based on your product/service category under GST slabs.
Step 3: Choose Mode
Select "GST Exclusive" to add GST, or "GST Inclusive" to remove GST and find base price.
When buyer and seller are in same state:
- CGST: Central GST (50% of total GST) - goes to Central Govt
- SGST: State GST (50% of total GST) - goes to State Govt
- Example: 18% GST = 9% CGST + 9% SGST
- ITC: Both CGST and SGST credits available
When buyer and seller are in different states:
- IGST: Integrated GST (100% of total GST)
- Collection: Collected by Centre, shared with destination state
- Example: 18% GST = Full 18% as IGST
- ITC: Only IGST credit available
For Union Territories without legislature:
- CGST + UTGST: Applies in Delhi, Puducherry, J&K, etc.
- Structure: Similar to CGST+SGST model
- Rate: Same as intra-state supplies
- Example: 18% GST = 9% CGST + 9% UTGST
Who Uses GST Calculators & Why?
GST calculation is integral to every B2B and B2C transaction!
- Pricing Products: Determine MRP by adding GST to base cost. Example: Product costs ₹500, add 18% GST = ₹590 MRP
- Generating Invoices: Show GST breakdown separately on tax invoices - mandatory for compliance
- Quotations & Estimates: Provide customers with accurate quotes including all taxes
- Profit Margin Analysis: Calculate pre-GST cost to determine actual profit margins after GST liability
Real Example - Retail Shop:
Selling AC Unit:
- Purchase Price (excl. GST): ₹25,000
- Add 28% GST: ₹7,000
- Selling Price (incl. GST): ₹32,000
- GST Liability: ₹7,000 (to be paid to government)
- ITC Benefit: Can claim GST paid on purchase as input credit
Monthly/quarterly GST compliance requires accurate calculations:
- GSTR-1 (Outward Supplies): Report all sales with GST collected - total taxable value + CGST/SGST/IGST
- GSTR-3B (Summary Return): Calculate net GST payable = Output GST - Input Tax Credit
- GSTR-2A/2B (Input Credit): Verify ITC available from suppliers' GSTR-1 filings
- Reconciliation: Match books with GST portal data to avoid notices
CA professionals handle complex GST scenarios daily!
| Scenario | GST Treatment | Calculation Method |
|---|---|---|
| Reverse Charge Mechanism (RCM) | Recipient pays GST instead of supplier | Calculate GST on taxable value, pay via cash ledger first, then claim ITC |
| Composition Scheme | Turnover < ₹1.5 Cr, lower tax rate | Pay fixed % of turnover (1%/6%/5%) - NO ITC available |
| Mixed Supplies | Taxable + Exempt goods/services | Apportion ITC using common credit formula (Rule 42/43) |
| Job Work | Processing customer's goods | GST on job work charges only (not on material value) |
| E-commerce Operators | TCS @ 1% on net taxable supplies | Collect TCS, remit to govt, issue TCS certificate to suppliers |
Professional Practice:
CAs use GST calculators for client advisory, return preparation, audit verification, and litigation support. Accurate GST computation prevents interest (18% p.a.), late fees (₹50/day), and penalty proceedings.
Consumers benefit from understanding GST impact!
- Bill Verification: Check if restaurant/shop has charged correct GST rate and shown proper breakup
- MRP Decoding: Understand how much GST is embedded in MRP - "₹118 includes ₹18 GST @ 18%"
- Discount Calculations: Calculate actual savings - "Flat 20% off" on MRP including GST vs excluding GST
- Online Shopping: Compare prices across platforms - some show price + GST separately, others show inclusive pricing
GST significantly impacts major purchases:
- Real Estate: Under-construction properties attract 5% or 12% GST (affordable vs regular). Ready-to-move-in exempt from GST
- Cars & Vehicles: GST ranges from 28% (small cars) to 50%+ (luxury/SUVs) including cess. EVs at just 5%!
- Electronics: TVs, ACs, refrigerators at 28% GST. Calculate final outflow accurately
- Jewellery: Gold jewellery 3% GST, making charges 5% GST - calculate separately
