How BMI is Calculated

BMI Formula:
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ [height (m)]²

Example: Weight 70kg, Height 1.75m
BMI = 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 70 ÷ 3.0625 = 22.86 (Normal weight)

Metric System (kg, m)

BMI = kg / m²

  • Weight in kilograms (kg)
  • Height in meters (m) or centimeters (cm)
  • Most common worldwide
Imperial System (lbs, ft/in)

BMI = 703 × lbs / in²

  • Weight in pounds (lbs)

BMI has limitations:

  • Doesn't distinguish: Muscle vs fat (athletes may have high BMI but low body fat)
  • Age factor: Elderly may have normal BMI but high body fat (sarcopenia)
  • Ethnicity: Asian populations have higher health risks at lower BMI
  • Pregnancy: Not applicable for pregnant women
  • Children: Use age/gender-specific BMI percentiles for under 18
  • Better approach: Combine BMI with waist circumference, body fat %, overall health

WHO recommended ranges:

  • Normal Range: 18.5 - 24.9 (lowest health risk)
  • Ideal for Most Adults: 20-22 (optimal longevity)
  • Asian Populations: 18.5-23 (lower cutoff due to higher diabetes/CVD risk)
  • Seniors (65+): 23-27 (slightly higher may be protective)
  • Important: Individual targets vary based on genetics, muscle mass, health conditions
